INTERNET CENSORSHIP IN THE UAE, 2017
85 cm × 60 cm
The theme of this poster touches on the censorship of the internet in the Emirates. The title “الممنوع مرغوب” comes from an Arabic proverb which means “Whatever is forbidden is often desirable”. The use of Virtual Private Networks (VPN) acts as a symbol for this proverb as it can be used as a method of accessing any blocked websites.
Arabic typefaces have been used in a default, raw manner to represent disappointment and reality the user faces when they cannot access a desired website. Even though the internet is a limited space of inputted information, matters can be seen as even more limited when they are blocked or censored.
